People seem to be turning a blind eye to the fact that if it weren't for the U.S. dub, many people(such as myself) would not of become Sailor Moon fans. Many people do not want to take the time to read subtitles;they want to see a show without having to choose between reading subtitles and missing the action or watching the action and missing what the characters are saying. Also, people seem to be overlooking the fact that even the originals have flaws as well as good points. The dub is not 100 % perfect, and neither are the subs.People constantly point out the bad points of the U.S. dubs and talk about the good points of the subs. I've even one person stoop as low as to directly make cruel fun of Molly's Brooklyn accent and then laugh about it.If I had a Brooklyn accent,I'd sure be offended by that.
If people are willing to critisize the dubs so much, then they should be willing to critisize the subs as well.

I'm afraid I find your logic wanting. I'm perfectly willing to criticise the original (and I do, voluminously, in every topic where the Stars season, my favourite bugbear, is mentioned....) but since this is a topic dedicated to discussing the merits and demerits of the dub, it should not be a surprise that people are doing exactly that.
As for your first point, you mean that if there were no dub many people would never have become Sailor Moon fans. That is not the same as saying if this dub did not exist many people would never have become Sailor Moon fans. There could instead have been a different dub without some of the faults of the existing one. That is the alternative the dub-criticisers are saying they would have preferred.

Yes, there are problems with the Original. If you want to discuss them, make a thread. This is for the Dub.
The people who dubbed are little kid cartooners. Therefore, to keep their image, they had to change it to a little kid cartoon. I personally think that the wrong people dubbed it.

Honestly, the theory "You wouldn't have discovered Sailor Moon/anime in general if it wasn't for the DiC dub!" doesn't fly right with me. I'm sure many people would've found out about it, it just would've taken a few more years. Think about it. A lot of anime gets licensed today because of the internet fandom who found out about it through fansubs, such as Lucky Star and Gurren Lagann. There are also fansubs of older series floating around that have gained a decent amount of popularity.
Here's my hypothetical situation: Let's say DiC and Cloverway never dubbed Sailor Moon. Anime still made it to America anyway, because Gundam Wing and DBZ were on around the same time. By the time Pretty Guardian starts, fansubbing has gotten pretty big on the internet. A fansub group picks up PGSM and begins translating it. Who's to say they won't do the anime as well? Fansubs of Sailor Moon have been around since before the last 17 episodes of R were dubbed. I might be grasping at straws here, but we might even have gotten a more faithful-to-the-original dub if DiC had never actually dubbed SM. It just probably would've taken a few extra years for the anime market to take off.
And as for reading subtitles, well, that's just a personal preference. I'm a quick reader and have never had a problem reading subs and missing action on the screen. But I do like watching my R2s as I am able to catch a lot more split-second things without having to worry about subtitles. Besides, even though Sailor Moon has witty and funny dialogue, you don't necessarily need to understand what they're saying to follow and enjoy an episode.

You made some very good points,Cybertron...I got to thinking what would've been like if someone like Disney or Hanna-Barbera dubbed Sailor Moon instead of DIC and Cloverway.I got to thinknig that someone like Disney or Hanna-Barbera may of kept more to the original than DIC did(they may of still cut out the nudity and changed the swear words,though)...but I imagine either of those companies would've kept the Japanese names and not Americanize the show so much.

*Blinks* You DO know what those too companys are famous for right? Disney had at the point only made tv shows like "The Mickey Mouse Club" and Hanna-Barbera had been making shows like " The Flintstones." How do you feel that eperience could make a good dub?

It was just something I was thinking.I did not really say they would be the best at dubbing Sailor Moon.Besides,I've seen things dubbed by them before on the internet.I've seen their shows dubbed into other languages, and the video's descriptions always included "this video was dubbed by Walt Disney Co/Hanna-Barbera".

I think the actors of the dub were actually decent compared to something very old.... like Astro Boy (=P) well for DiC I think they were good but Cloverway's dubbers..... no... but if they had an uncut series it would make everything way better.

I have to say that surprises me I really like Makoto's voice for just that reason -- I think it comes across as tough, I wouldn't use the word "butch" but then I don't think the character is either. I loved the way the actress portrays the conflict between her masculine and feminine side in the crucial episode 29, for instance. I'll have to go and re-watch some dub now to see how it compares..... From now on I will name the dub SM characters for example Serena etc. And the original in Japanese example Usagi because I am sick of saying 'dub Usagi', 'Usagi's english voice actress' You probably dont get me ^_^; I dont see a problem with Makoto's voice ^_^; Makoto's voice actress (or seiyuu) Shinohara Emi is awsome! She can change her voice from slightly high when she is in love to low when she's angry (scary) ^_^; Lita's voice sounded good but there wasnt any tone change like Makoto, when shes either angry or happy she sounded the same all over. I watched Makoto's seiyuu's recent role, which was Claymore as Ophelia, and it sounded just like Makoto (though she over 40 now ^_^ and uses the EXACT same tone (you guys and girls should watch it some time but they deleted most of the english subs, only the fench, spanish and other subs are left). High when normal or playing a death game and low when awakened or angry. Plus she is a great singer! check out her latest image song for Ophelia, its not happy but it sounds quite good ^_^

Someone brought up the point that it would've taken a few more years and then the subbed would've come to America, but I think they fail to realize that the Sailor Moon dub was one of the largest starting points for anime getting popular with the general populus in America. It aired when I was in 2nd grade, and I used to watch it before school on public television. and then I was reading the manga in 5th. Toonami cropped up about that same time, and sailor moon was one of the first on its line up. From about that time on, that's also when the internet was getting more common usage in the states. so basically if the dub was never created, I doubt there would've been such popularity with anime at all among Americans or girls in general.
that aside, I agree with the original post that the dub has a dear spot in my heart, despite the horrible dialogue. something about a female zoicite just gets me laughing like a chipmunk. I still prefer the sub to the dub, and the manga and to the sub. all versions of sailor moon are so different, and I love them all.
