Plus that when you're talking about dubbing you may not get all the voices *kicks the table the PC stands on* I mean here in Romania when they last aired Sailor Moon(Cuz they don't air no other decent anime on the public TV), more than 10 years ago they had(and still have) only ONE person to dubb. A woman pretending to be: -A(or more) junior high-school girl(s) -A(or more) man -A(or more cat(s) -A(or more) daemon(s) Well you get the picture! i saw sailor moon when i was veryyy little and i don't remember very well... but i agree with you. i know that every dubbed cartoon here is a big s***! sorry for the word same here,but the chinese dub of the first season was really good!I grew up with it and i dont like the way everyone (except moon in Sailor Stars) had such a different voice in chinese Rei's voice fit her so good in the first season ^^ oh and in general,japanese anie dubbed into english:am I the only one who find it annoying when they literally translate ex Riku-san into miss Riku or Honda-san into miss Honda?I know there should be something from the original in the dub,but I just find it annoying and it kinda ruins it for me

Japanese women have naturally higher voices than American women, I've heard. Almost all anime cast women with high voices. Rediting my bit... True, all of the Seiyuu (with the exception of Ogata Megumi and a few others...) have high voices I have been listening to the SM songs sung by the seiyuu, for a while, and the high voices make the really, really, really good singers ^_^ Even if I only know 5% of what they are saying. *Bows down to the Seiyuu* ^_^;

I actually enjoy the dub, even though they changed quite alot of it. Some of the voices were great (Serena's was the only one to make me cringe really once the new actress came in, the first one was very good) and the storylines were pretty much ok. The fact that they changed the last two episode of the first series made sense as, in Japan, the broadcaster got alot of complaints from parents for showing the senshi screaming in pain and dying. It was kinda depressing.

But still, cutting two episodes all the way down into one was just unacceptable to me. If you're going to dub something, you should at least preserve a semblance of the original story, which didn't happen, and all emotional connection is lost. It should have been obvious that death was going to happen, anyways, they're the Sailor Soldiers.

Surely the point of a dub is that the characters speak English (or whatever language) and "san" isn't English. You have to remember that we diehard SM fans are a pretty select bunch... most of the target audience wouldn't understand it. I don't mind the occasional use of native words for things that are really untranslatable concepts (and indeed I use a few in my fanfics) but "Miss Honda" is what we call a female whose surname is Honda in English, so that one is pretty well translatable.

I think the American dub cut more than just two episodes out. In the Japanese, Minako comes in on episode 33, and in the the English dub she comes in on episode 29.
Also, it annoys me that they changed characters genders, changed dialogue, changed names, changed music, changed character relationships. That's not translating something into English... that's almost like totally rewriting the whole thing. I am so glad that dubbed anime now a days isn't like that.

For the record: they cut out episodes 2, 5, 6, 20 and 67 and merged 45/46.

I could stand the American dub when I was little, but watching it now makes me die a little inside. They just butchered the story so much. ;-;
And the music and 'valley girl' speak bothers me.

Honestly, I think American Sailor Moon is more like a childish CARTOON for children to watch and laugh at, and it doesn't take a lot of thinking to understand what's going on, and it's all just really simplified and 'funny' and it's got the whole adults attempting to speak like kids (thus the valley girl talk and the horribly annoying 'slang' that they think the kids used back then, when they really didn't because adults just never ever get slang right lol) just like most other 'teen' cartoons these days. (AKA Totally Spies)
Whereas the Japanese Sailor Moon is a true ANIME. (like it's supposed to be!) with a lot more thought into it, and adaptable for any generation to enjoy, with still a little funny tied in, but a lot more seriousness.

I'll say this much, If the Japanese version were to be re-dubbed in English, with all the original material, I'd probably enjoy it better than I enjoyed the American adaption. As stated above by TotallyUsagi, the American version was more comical, which in truth is probably why I enjoyed it so much as a young child. Comedy has always been my thing. But nowadays, I can appreciate what the original brings to the table. I'd jump to the heavens if someone were to re-dub the Sailor Moon anime. But, I could never say that I disliked the first American dub. Sure it wasn't perfect, but it was my first anime, I loved it to the point of obsession, and I'll always treasure it. (doesn't mean I'll stop dreaming of the day they re-dub it, nor the day they dub the fifth season into English!)

Dream on, The_Lost_Treasure. The closest you're going to get to the dub of stars is fighterforlove on youtube. But that's supposed to be really good when it comes out.
As for the dub, the still dub anime's that way. And it sort of isn't DiC's fault. They bought it, and they dubbed it. But they are a children cartoon company, they are doing little kid stuff. (I know, my younger brother watches "Horseland" every monday.) Soooo, they do Sailor Moon little kid style.

Whereas the Japanese Sailor Moon is a true ANIME. (like it's supposed to be!) with a lot more thought into it, and adaptable for any generation to enjoy, with still a little funny tied in, but a lot more seriousness. I'm going to get on my soapbox here: There's NO such thing as "real anime". This is as bad as saying that beagles are "real dogs" and pugs aren't. Say you watched "Dr. Phil" show,then you watched "Super Nanny". Would you go around telling people that "Dr Phil" is a "real family help show" and that "Super Nanny" was just some woman staying with random families? Really now. Just as there's no such thing as "real dogs" or "real family help shows" there is no such thing as "real anime". Anime is anime,whether it is "Pokemon" or "Sailor Moon" or "Hellsing" or "Inu-Yasha" or any other anime you wish to name. Just because an anime has adult stuff like swearing and nudity in it doesn't automatically make it a "real anime". Really. I find the whole "real anime" label to be really stupid and un-necessary. It's just a whole bunch of utter nonsense made up by some bored people who apparently decided to declare that adult anime was "real anime". People should just quit saying that certain animes are "real animes". Just because "Sailor Moon" had nudity and adult stuff cut out of it doesn't mean it's no less of an anime. It's still an anime,whether it has stuff cut out of it or not. You all may debate this if you wish,but just keep in mind that there is no such thing as "real anime" and there never will be any such thing as "real anime". *Gets off soapbox*

ha, wow it is wonderful everyone speaks their mind. So refreshing.
@mistress Vampire - yeah I know it's never going to happen. I like to dream though, even foolish dreams. Keeps me entertained and positive. Two things that are really hard for me to accomplish at times. Oh, and I'll have to keep my eye out for 'fighterforlove'.
