Hey, who takes Chem here? And is actually good at it? ;P I have two questions here about water and solvents and all that stuff. Question 1: What ions willbe produced when the following compounds dissociate in water? (It goes on to list a couple.) Question 2: What ions would be produced when the following compounds are added to water? (It goes on to list a few.) That's not the question I want answered though, funnily enough. My question is: do they mean the same thing? I reckon I can answer the question if they do, and there's probably no way in heck that I could answer if they don't (unless one of you gorgeous people could explain it ;D). I'm answering the questions as if they do mean the same thing though at the moment. I sort of need an answer by Monday night Australia time, because I start school again on Tuesday (how bad is that: school in three days, and beginning the homework... sigh...) And there is karma involved! Thank you darlings!! ;D ~SG

They don't mean the same thing. (I'm hoping I get this right, I was fairly good at Chem but I've forgotten some stuff. Someone check me!)
Basically, it's referring to reactions - when you add such and such to water (H2O, duh), what will be produced for the second one.
The first one is worded kind of weird to me (we never used dissociate) but I'm assuming that it means what will you get when a compound breaks apart in water.
...it's kind of late, so if you need more help, catch me at another time. lol.

It might be helpful if you listed what the compounds involved are.
Anyway, as far as I can tell they're not the same thing, because if a compound dissociates you get ions from the atoms that made it up, but if a compound reacts with water then as well as those you get H+ and OH- ions from the water molecule.

Yikes... I'm probably worse at Chem than I thought. Well... It says here in the textbook:
I've been answering all of the questions in that sort of style (I'm so screwed)
The compounds I had in questions one were: Cu(NO3)2 ZnSO4 (NH4)3PO4
The compounds I had in question two were potassium carbonate, magnesium oxide, lead (II) nitrate, iron (II) nitrate, sodium hydroxide, potassium sulfide, sodium sulfate, iron (III) nitrate.
Ah, crap. I just realised that I probably answered the third question wrong as well. It is: Write equations to show the ions produced when the following compounds are dissolved in water: magnesium sulfate, copper (II) ethanoate, sodium sulfide, lithium sulfate, potassium hydroxide. Yeesh. Any chance I did those right? I did the same thing as for the first two questions ;D (I'm crap at this. Bet I fail Chem this year.)
So, for example, Q1a) Cu(NO3)2 -> H20 -> Cu2+(aq) + NO3-(aq) was what I wrote as my answer. Q2a) Potassium carbonate -> 2K+(aq) + CO32+(aq) was my answer Q3a) Magnesium sulfate = MgSO4 -> H2O -> Mg2+(aq) + SO42-(aq) was my answer.
Because they're all probably wrong, do you know what I need to do? Karma will be doubled!
