I've been thinking about the different powers that each characters have in Sailor Moon. Scientifically some of them actually seem to make sense. This probably might be strange but go with me on this.
For example, Sailor Mercury's power has to do with water. The planet Mercury is the closest to the sun which means that the planet must be very dry even if it was habitable during the Silver Millennium. I would think that a person who lived on Mercury would find it useful to have power over water. The same thing can be said for Sailor Mars. The planet Mars is cold so powers over fire would be useful there. For Sailor Jupiter, her planet has storms so it makes sense for her to have power over thunder and lightning. I think her physical strength can be explained as well considering the large amount of gravity a planet like Jupiter has.
I'll admit though that there are some planets and powers where this can't be said. I don't think this can be said about the moon, Neptune, Saturn, Uranus, and Pluto. I may be wrong in thinking this though.
Does anyone else think so?

The powers mostly come from the Japanese planetary names. For example, Mercury is Suisei, which literally means "water star." The kanji for "sui" was chosen before the Japanese knew what Mercury was really like. This site does a really good job explaining the kanji within the planetary names and what they mean. Your explanations are a pretty cool idea though, I never thought of it like that.

A nicely planned out thought. I really enjoyed your thoughts in your first post there.

I can say that even without that aspect they seem to fit well. On another note, I've had the idea since I started watching the show. I credit the scientific reasoning side of my thoughts.

Yeah I have that problem of trying to inject science into Sailormoon (doesn't end well most of the time lol)
I think it's based on what some of the other people said about Japanese astrology and even what we think of when we think of some of the planets today. (Like mars conjures thoughts of fire and heat, venus for love, jupiter for storms)
I think neptune was another water power because the planet is blue (haha lame explanation I know)
