I'm amazed there isn't a thread about this. The Olympics have arrived! Did anyone watch the opening ceremony? I thought it was spectacular! Some of the sports they have are kinda weird. Table Tennis (Oh brother, that's a recreational, not a sport! c'mon!) Shooting (that's not a olympic sport!) Badmition, Fencing, Equestrion. All I can say is I feel sorry for all those doing outdoor sports in the smog and pollution.

I thought the opening ceremony was amazing! I especially loved how they were able to project waterfalls at the top of the stadium.
I feel bad for the athletes because of the smog too. Didn't some of them arrive to Beijing wearing masks because of it?

I used to enjoy the Olympics, but these days I've stopped caring because I'm just annoyed with the media's whole attitude of "the only thing that matters is how well British athletes do, because..... erm..... [haven't got a good reason but have to say something]..... well, they're British!"
Please, can't watching sport just be about enjoying watching sport any more?

I think the reason most people enjoy watching sports is because of the competition. I mean, if there's no competition, why even keep score? Why even have teams? Competition between teams is the whole point of sports; it's really just a modernized pseudo-"tribal warfare." So of course the media in every country is going to be pulling for their "tribe."

I don't care for watching the Olympics. But I did catch a glimpse of some gymnastics. Not sure what was going on, but I'm still surprised how people can do some of those amazing gymnatics. But now that I think about it, we could solve a lot of problems if we solved our differences in something like the Olympics. Instead of war, slap someone in the face with a white glove and then prove who is the better in a long series of games. lol

But many Olympic sports, such as the track races, are primarily contests between individuals. I've never heard of any of them before, so I don't care about which one wins, but it's still exciting to watch because they do.

They are individuals representing an entire country... they're the best from that country. And they're competing against each other, so of course the media is going to root for their own "home team." The whole point of the Olympics is athletes from different countries competing against each other. It's not just about individual athletes, it's about the country they represent. That's why each country sends their very best.

Not for all the sports, I think... There are some sports when you can be under the usual age, and some, as soccer, when you can be over the limits in rare occasions.

I know the Olympics closed yesterday XD but I thought I'd drop a comment here. I watched women's and men's volleyball (I heart volleyball), badminton, women's and men's gymnastics (Croatia's Filip Ude won the silver medal! and USA's gold and silver medalists in the women's single competition were amazing), a bit of handball, a bit of water polo, the gold medal match for badminton, most of the swimming competitions (I was blown away by Phelps!), and athletics, I lost a lot of nerves on the woman's high jump because of Blanka Vlašić. I was sad because she didn't won the gold because she got really close to it but I'm glad she won the silver medal. Oh yeah, and I watched a bit of the Tae Kwon Do competitions.
