So I know this is kind of rediculous...but I felt that I needed to ask anyways.... SO. Mugen. Is it pronounced "mYUgen" or "mOOgen"? At my school's anime/manga club (aka the Genshiken) last year, we were seriously debating. I couldn't remember, and a few others and I thought it was "mYU"gen", but most everyone else said it was "mOOgen"...? ><

Moo. In Japanese you write "myu" when it's pronounced "myu" (as in Sera Myu) and you write "mu" when it's pronounced "mu".

No, actually you pronounce it "mugen". You write the Kanji like this The transcription is "mugen". It's not possible to pronounce it "moogen" or "myugen", because these two words have an absolutely different transcription. I would love to show you the way its writing in Hiragana, but I just realised that this Forum is not accepting Japanese writing! @v-chan: But if you want to be completely sure than I can ask my sensei (teacher)!

Um.... I think you've misunderstood. For those of us who don't speak Japanese, saying that "mugen" is pronounced like "mugen" is slightly uninformative. That's why V-chan was asking how you'd write the pronunciation in English (Japanese "u" = English "oo").

I study Japanese at the university and I'm afraid that because of that I'm thinking "Japanese" most of the time! I'm sorry!

I always pronunced it "Moogen", but only because that's how it sounds in the anime But that's an easy mistake to make

I've always pronounced "mugen" as "mew-gen". I don't know know the correct way, really. I just pronounced the way it sounded right to me.

I know it's Moo-gen but I tend to garble it sometimes and say Myu-gen on accident.
