NOTE: This post has been heavily edited in light of a new discovery. See my post further down the page.
This is, I've just discovered, a position copied exactly from the 1972 World Chess Championship. Ami has just made the exact same blunder that caused Spassky to lose the game it's copied from:
27. Qc2?? Bxa4
Spassky resigned immediately at this point.
28. Qd2 Bxd1
29. Qxd1
Usagi and her friends cheer wildly at this point, shouting out that Ami has brilliantly equalised. In fact, the position is still easily winning for Black after 29... Qxe4.
After Ami wins the game (how, one wonders...) Berthier challenges her to a second game, with the lives of her friends at stake. This time, Berthier gives herself an advantage: the players will start from the following position. (I'll give a diagram rather than a screenshot, as we only see it from the side.)
OK, "advantage" is a bit of an understatement, especially given the way Ami has been playing. But what follows is just horrendous....
1. h4? gxh4
At this point Berthier smiles and tells Ami that each time she loses a piece, more of her body will freeze until she becomes completely frozen. Ami therefore plays:
2. d4?? cxd4
3. Kd2 e3+
...and, with Ami about to lose her last pawn, Tuxedo Mask finally arrives to point out the simple moral: if you can't win your opponent's pieces by playing the game, it's a lot easier to just break them.
My only question is: why all this palaver? Why couldn't they just make Ami actually be able to play an actual game of chess?
Discuss.
