I'll start at the beginning for this -
HTML or Hyper Text Markup language is the basic building block of a web page.
To write it, you must use what are refered to as markup tags these are much like the tags used in forums, only they control more and can be written in just a text editor.
When writing html, you should always close the tag you're using or it may result in the page not behaving right, a / is used with the tag again to close it up.
As a example the primary part of a page that says that it is html is:
<html>
this is closed by:
</html>
any text not within these is not properly part of a web page.
Next up you specify <head></head> and <body></body> these two lots of tags do two things:
<head></head> is a header area of the web page, it is't displayed but contains info used by the web page.
<body></body> is the actual area where the markup tags are written.
You should next put some info into the header area:
<title>this is some web page test</title>
<meta name="keywords" content="tutorial test page html" />
<meta name="description" content="A test page used in this tutorial" />
The first line is the text that appears in the title bar of your web browser, anything within the <title></title> tags will appear there.
The second line gives keywords for search engines, the <meta> tag defines that it is for search engines and they will use this. Anything within the content quotes is used as keywords to help someone find the page, you should avoid trying to 'cheat' search engines, as if they realise it they will mark your site down on the rankings system the particular search engine uses, so it will be harder for your site to be found.
The third line allows you to define a description that a search engine will use with your site reference.
Lastly you should put the line <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> on the first line before the html tag, this line has no end tag and is for the browser. This line defines that your code is clean code, meaning the tags are properly closed and is free from presentation.
alternatively you can use <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> which is a more tolerant form and is meant for those not using cascade style sheets (CSS)
or you can use <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Frameset//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/frameset.dtd"> this is for when you're using frames on your site, otherwise its the same as the previous one.
the above should give you the following which you can copy and paste in a text editor and save, giving it a .htm or .html ending
more tomorrow...
