(Sorry to make two topics in the same board so close to each other, but had originally intended to post only this one befor saw the Hobbit movie blog...)
Anyways, I heard an interesting Iowan ghost story on the radio this morning, and I thought I'd share i ith you. It's not scary at all, just kinda...weird...so if you're like me and can't stand scary stuff, you're in the clear. I'm telling this in my own words, because I didn't catch all the little tiny details.
---
There's a road that leads from Iowa City to Camanche, Iowa, known rather collectively around this area as the "Camanche Road". Since Camanche is a very small town, and that road doesn't go anywhere else, you won't find many people diving on it, let alone driving on it late at night.
But if you do drive on the Camanche Road late at night, you'll probably notice a man, walking on the shoulder of the road, always wearing a top hat. He never asks you for a ride, but if you stop and offer him one, he will get in. Everything's fairly normal until the end of the ride, when he will pull out a small gift out of his pocket and give it to you.
The thing about the gifts is they end up costing the recipient far more then they're worth.
One woman recieved a beautiful lady's watch from the man. But when she started wearing it, the woman noticed it had a small problem. When she brought it in to be fixed, another problem turned up. Then another, and another, until fixing all the problems it had wound up costing the woman more then it was worth.
Another woman recieved a small bottle of expensive perfume. But it turned out she was allergic to it-and treating the reaction she got to it, again, cost more money then the perfume would have ever been worth.
A man, in the 50s, recieved two tickets to an upscale restaraunt here in Davenport. Somehow, the Man in the Top-Hat had know he could take his girlfriend out to dinner-even though the man had never mentioned her. So the man took his girlfriend to dinner. She was impressed-they usually went to see a movie. But during the dinner, a small disagreement turned into a huge argument, and the two broke up-even though they'd been practically engaged before coming in. Again, costing more then the tickets had been worth, just not in money.
If you wind up traveling the Camanche Road and see the man, would you give him a ride? Probably not, but wouldn't you be curious to see what you get?
---
So, what do you think of that? Do you think the ghost was once a wealthy man, but something terrible happened to him because of it-and he's trying to teach us that wealth is not good?
As for me picking him up, I doubt I'll be going to Camanche anytime soon, but I wouldn't know if I'd pick him up. I'd be dying of curiousity, though. Maybe, if I did pick him up, I'd be a lot more cautious about what he gives me.
Oh, and I do know someone who's driven the Camanche Road plenty of times-Jean, my dad's girlfriend who lives with us. Her family lives in Camanche, so she drives up there a lot, and she usually doesn't come back until late. Maybe she's seen him. I'll have to ask her when she gets back.
Interesting story, wasn't it?
