My husband brought up an interesting point the other day or it just might of been that it was late when we were talking about this. The question was why is it "Merry Christmas" where the rest of the holidays are just "Happy"...whatever. Christmas is the only one that has something different. So we were wondering if anyone knew.

um i really don't know, i have noticed that. They all mean the same but i guess it would sound weird if you said happy Christmas.

Simple. Happy Christmas is a British thing. You're American, therefore you are so utterly special(or was it the other way around?) and say "Merry Christmas".

Happy Christmas always sounded weird to me. But that's because I'm so used to saying Merry.
An explanation I have (and I came up with this on the spot) is that Christmas is, like, *the* principal American holiday, even more than the 4th. And Merry is usually used as a stronger synonym for happy, so maybe Merry is used because people are generally happiest at Christmas?
Iunno. That seems like a totally cock-and-bull explanation, but eh. *shrugs*

Merry is just another word for cheerful. Back in the day, they would of said "Have a merry Christmas." but since people use the word merry less and less it got shortened to "Merry Christmas.'' They probably said Merry Easter! etc. too, but we just don't.

You owe me apologies times two. This proves that you still haven't read all the thread(or at least all of my posts, which is wrong by itself) ^This. You fail at Internet.

larry,
"what is tolerance? -- it is the consequence of humanity. we are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly -- that is the first law of nature."
--voltaire
i come here to participate in open and friendly conversations. i do not come here to be mocked or made to feel unwelcome which you have so adamantly done so. please try to practice tolerance and look past such frivolous mistakes. you will be happier in the long run.
i refuse to continue this asinine argument, or let you continue to make such demeaning remarks towards me. hopefully you are mature enough to respect that.
oh yeah..
live, and let live.

what's weird though that they didn't say "Happy Christmas" in the 5th Harry Potter movie (if not rarely) I wonder why they suddenly decided to change it.
