Ellethwen mentioned we should have an FAQ thread, so here it is. This is supposed to answer the most common questions, regarding mostly BBCode, so it will work on most forums on the internetz.
Q: So what's this BBCode thingy we're talking about here?
A: BBCode, or Bulletin Board Code is, pretty much, a lightweight alternative to formatting your posts using HTML. It also has some server-side advantages, but those are not the purpose of this FAQ.
Q: Ok, so, how do I format text using bold, italic, underline, or colors?
A: Bold, Italic, and Underlined are some of the most basic BBCode tags. So here it is:
Q: Er, you forgot the colors?
A: Good point, colors use another type of tags, where you also specify an argument to be used in the tag. Simply put, you'll use
Note, however, that here, on Proboards, the color tag does not use # before the hexadecimal color code.
Q: Say, you used a link right there, how did you do that?
A: Posting links is quite easy, but there are 2 ways of doing it. One is used to make a bunch of text a link
The other way of doing it, is adding a link to a regular text, this leads to google
Q: Uh-huh, and what if I want to add images to my post? What then?
A: Well, first thing first, you can't paste an image into your post. Instead, you have to upload it, as a file somewhere(right now, the most popular image hosts are Imageshack and Photobucket), and then just place the direct link between img tags:
Q: I've seen people quote others' messages, how do they do that?
A: Well they probably hit the "Quote" button on that said post But you can still use
Q: Hmm, what about size?
A: Ah, size, well normally,
Q: Anything else I should know?
A: Well, there are plenty more tags to [ab]use, but for the sake of this FAQ's simplicity, I won't go into detail, I'll just say this: most communities have buttons in their "Post Reply" pages, and those buttons are almost always linked with BBCode, so you can try them out.
Q: Oh, and one more thing, what did you use to make your tags not worked?
A: I just used code tags.

[b]Bold text[/b]
[i]Italic text[/i]
[u]Underlined text[/u]

A: Good point, colors use another type of tags, where you also specify an argument to be used in the tag. Simply put, you'll use
[color=red]Red text[/color]
to get red text. While all regular colors are supported(if you use color=ivory you won't get ivory-colored text), if you ever feel that you need extra colors to your text, you can use hexadecimal colors, like this[color=#FF0000]Red text[/color]
Note, however, that here, on Proboards, the color tag does not use # before the hexadecimal color code.
Q: Say, you used a link right there, how did you do that?
A: Posting links is quite easy, but there are 2 ways of doing it. One is used to make a bunch of text a link
[url]link[/url]
Course, that link won't lead to a real site, and depending on your browser's settings, will probably lead to a search engine's results on "link". The other way of doing it, is adding a link to a regular text, this leads to google
[url=www.google.com]this leads to google[/url]
As you can see, I've added the link inside the url tag.Q: Uh-huh, and what if I want to add images to my post? What then?

Q: I've seen people quote others' messages, how do they do that?
A: Well they probably hit the "Quote" button on that said post But you can still use
[quote]Quoted text[/quote]
to quote.Q: Hmm, what about size?
A: Ah, size, well normally,
[size=12]Normal-sized text[/size]
would yield in this size you're seeing here, however, a certain number of communities use their own size values. In Proboards' example, [size=2]is normal text[/size]
[size=1]is small text and[/size]
[size=5]is larger text[/size]
