I always tried to figure out the physics behind a lightsaber. I know that lightsabers are fueled by some special type of crystal, and the inside of the handle has a bunch of mechanical functions to it. Now since the blades of lightsabers are just light, I assume they can cut because they're really hot (in fact, there are some scenes that confirm that, such as the burnt marks left after someone sliced something with the saber or how about that scene when Qui Gon Jin and Obi Wan were trying to open the security door?). Also, the mechanics of the lightsaber handle made it cool enough to the point where someone can hold it. Then there's the light issue. A beam of light is infinite. But the only light that's visible with a lightsaber is the part emitting the most radiation, which is from the forte (bottom of blade) and up 3 feet or so. That radiation starts to decline the further you go up the blade and then is all the sudden virtually non existant.
And of course, the color is determined by the type of crystals you use.

I couldn't really say what the physics behind the lightsaber is but I could definately say that it could be possible to create our own primitive version of one if someone really thought about it.

Yeah, I'd have to check in my books...I think I read something about using the crystals to focus the energy or something.
Oh and I also read that some lightsabers also have knobs that can adjust the length of the blade.

I have never heard of that before. Although I know that lasers can be used for surgery.
