Okay, that little bit is confusing me. Usagi doesn't love Mamoru? Isn't that a perception?
Sometimes I get the feeling that the only reason a lot of people ship Seiya and Usagi is because Seiya looks nicer. Which is totally unfair, because he showed up in the season with the best animation....
I have reasons why I think Seiya is worse, and it's not just because Mamoru was destined for her.
-Seiya only feel in love with her because she was like Kakyuu. He probably even thought she WAS Kakyuu. He wasn't really in love with Usagi at first; he was in love with Kakyuu. So, he wasn't seeing Usagi for who she really was, right until around Kakyuu actually showed up.
-I think he plays around too much, keyword I think. It wasn't unless Usagi was in danger and until he actually found out Usagi was Sailor Moon that he started trying to defend her all the time.
-As others have said, he seemed to be only a temporary replacement.
And until someone can provide a reason for why Seiya is better other then "he's sweet and caring", I'm not going to budge. Because Mamoru was sweet and caring too. People miss that the reason he broke up with Usagi was to protect her (it really tore him up and we know it), that he didn't treat her like "wow I love you!" in the first season because she was just a random acquaintance whom he didn't know was Sailor Moon (whom we all know intrigued him, for lack of a better word), and that he's put himself out for her ALL THE TIME.
The fact that Seiya was quicker to get around to it doesn't change my opinion. And again, he was quicker to get to treating Usagi like he did because of her similarities to Kakyuu. And I know the website said that, but it's true, and a good point.

Only the morons who aren't true Seiya/Usagi fans like Seiya because he "looks nicer". I like Seiya as a character. I like his personality, and his dedication to Kakyuu and Usagi. In fact, Seiya is one of my favorite BSSM characters besides Haruka. True, Seiya fell in love with her at first because Usagi reminded him/her of Kakyuu... but it's not like as soon as Kakyuu appeared, Seiya stopped caring about Usagi. The fact that Seiya stepped back when Mamoru returned only sealed my love for Seiya as a character. How many people do you know that would actually step back? I give the guy/girl credit.. that takes a lot of strength to do. I personally just feel that Mamoru is a weak character, moreso in the anime. That's another reason why I love Seiya. Seiya kicks butt without the roses (what the heck, how much damage is a FLOWER going to do?!) and cheesy Hallmark greeting card reciting. You absolutely do have some good points. It just depends on the way you look at it. I'm just tired of people making Seiya out to be some kind of jerk.

Personally, Mamoru makes a much prettier guy, in my opinion. So that's not why I like Seiya-Usagi better. I like Seiya's personality better.
I love Seiya because he/she's just not a moron. The weakness of Mamoru in the anime just annoys me to no end. His uselessness and inability to do anything but give corny speeches and toss roses, then get knocked down in a few seconds just gets on my nerves SO much. I mean, Seiya has actually saved Usagi numerous times, and like seriously saved her, and is still able to stand up and keep protecting her again. I tried to think of times where Mamoru saves Usagi, and each time I remember it being a sort of one time hit thing. Where he gets hit, he's down, out cold, Usagi saves him and the day. Whee. What a pansy.
And furthermore, in the anime, Mamoru's just so cold. I mean, whenever he's with Usagi, he looks extremely uncomfortable and awkward.
Seiya just always seems to be more comfortable and accepting of Usagi's antics. The two just seem to click more.
I love Seiya's personality, I love how s/he's such a strong character with much more beyond the surface. S/he seems so immature and silly at times, yet beneath the surface his/her true ability to be mature and see the real light of things (stepping back from a deep love) shines.
I love how he is able to care so much for Usagi, and how sweet they look together. I love how he is so able to protect Usagi and so comfortable with everything she does.
And perhaps the fact that Usagi doesn't love Seiya makes it all the more intriguing. The unrequited factor just makes the story all the more heart touching. Unrequited, but Seiya's okay with that. Unrequited, but s/he steps back.
I think the unrequited love is maybe one of the deepest aspects of the relationship, so I'm okay that Usagi doesn't love Seiya.

The fact that Usagi does not return Seiya's affections only makes me care for him even more as a character. Also, the fact that he can accept it. It's not simply about disliking Mamoru, it's more about liking Seiya as a person.

Well, having been on the side of unrequited love twice now (I seem to have bad luck *sigh*, I can tell you how much it absolutely sucks, and that if Seiya was a smidgen less honorable, s/he probably wouldn't have backed off, and it was probably extremely hard.
Poor Seiya....and Mamoru. *hugs, shuffles off*

There's this song sung by Seiya's seiyuu (lol that rimes) named Ginga ichi mibun chigai na kataomoi (Unrequited love a station apart in the galaxy) that was writen by Naoko-sama It's about how Seiya feel about his one-side love. "My longing is for only one person, my precious princess Even destruction must occur for peace day after day... I came flowing here to the solar system, and you too are a princess One day I was bewitched by your smiling face I, Seiya, feel it, this wondrous feeling I, Fighter, feel it, different from my mission This surely is unrequited love a station apart in the galaxy" That is, of course, a translation You can check the lyrics and download the song through sailormusic.net I that song! Still, I prefer Mamoru for Usagi, nothing better for a princess than a prince Though, Seiya...

Such a beautiful song. It reminds me of lyrics from a duet sung by Usagi and Seiya in SeraMyu. I love Seiya's lines in this song... it shows how much he really cares for Usagi. In this song, Usagi is singing to Mamoru, who is away to America and she is totally oblivious to the fact that Seiya is confessing his love (that always bugged me about Usagi).
Usagi: No matter what I do, inside my heart there are only things about you I miss you More than just playing childishly back in those days our deep love was always maturing
Usagi and Seiya: With only the prayers within my heart there are things I can't tell you...
Usagi: There are times when love causes loneliness You must know that I can't be an adult Don't leave me alone anymore
Seiya: I can't replace the person that you love but I will always stay by your side and I will protect you
Usagi: There are times when love causes pain
Seiya: Knowing that, do you understand how I love you? Now I feel alone close to you
Usagi: Don't leave me alone anymore

I found one-side love extremely romantic. It takes a lot of courage to love someone that belongs to someone else When Seiya asks "Am I not good enough?" it's just heart breaking
By any chance, Rissachu, do you know the name of that song?

The one I posted? It's called "I Miss You" from Sera Myu. It's actually in Japanese. The only English parts are "I Miss You", "Don't leave me alone anymore" and "Now I feel alone close to you".

It's not usually remembered as one of those 'heartbreaking' scenes, but I always think of it when I think of sad Sailor Moon scenes.
